Deadline extended for ‘Fun in the Sun’ queen entries

Organizers have decided to extend the entry deadline for this year’s Fun in the Sun queen pageant to next Friday (June 3).
“I can’t give you a confirmed number, but right now, it looks like we have four names,” said Sherri Puddicombe, who has teamed up with Dawn Booth, a Fun in the Sun committee member, and Cheryl McCallum to organize the pageant.
“Four is enough to have the contest, but it would be nice we could have just a couple more. It would really help with the events,” she added.
Participants must be aged 15-19 by May 1, 2004, a resident of Rainy River District, of good character, and willing to conduct themselves in an exemplary manner.
As in previous years, the queen contestants will take part in a variety of events and activities, including the Strawberry Social, Teddy Bears Picnic, Mini-Queen pageant, and Canada Day parade, as well as participating in the entertainment night and crowning.
Puddicombe, who’s been involved with the pageant for the past five years, noted the crowning definitely will take place on July 1 at Pither’s Point and not during the entertainment night, as it did last year.
Contestants also must be available, if crowned queen or princess, to make personal appearances at important community events, as well as represent Fun in the Sun in a professional manner, throughout the year they hold the title.
Each contestant must find a business sponsor(s) to cover their entry fee of $250. In addition, they will sell buttons throughout June.
Participants are awarded for their efforts with various scholarships and prizes, as well as the title of “Miss Fun in the Sun.” Puddicombe noted the details for prizes still are being worked out.
Anyone interested in entering the queen pageant can contact Booth (274-5773) or Puddicombe (274-6617) before June 3.
