Stewart and Alice Kellar celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at the Emo Legion recently with relatives, friends, and neighbours on hand to wish the couple the best of health and many more years of happy life together.
Both were pinned with white rose boutonnieres and seated. The centre of their table was graced with yellow American roses–a love gift from Stewart to his wife.
The reception area was decorated with white balloons while lit candles in small vases centered each guest table. On a separate table was a one-layer decorated cake flanked by flowers in vases.
The cake itself had decorative icing, complete with floral arrangements in the corners, and it was inscribed, “Happy 60th Anniversary Alice and Stewart.”
Refreshments were served to guests by the Emo Knox United church ladies.
The couple was married in Emo on May 12, 1941. Stewart then served in the Royal Canadian Army Corps for almost four years, including 39 months overseas.
He later worked for natural resources for 32 years.
Meanwhile, Alice kept the home fires burning and making quilts, which she continues to do. She tells me she has made one for each member of her families.
Stewart and Alice raised two children. Allan (Jeanne) Kellar and their two sons, Neil and Stewart, live in Ignace while Linda (Ted) Carey and their two sons, Sandy and Robert, and two daughters, Debbie and Morgan, live in Kenora.
During the afternoon, the Kellar musical family took to the stage and entertained guests with several well-known selections, which was greatly appreciated.
After the Legion reception, 22 members of the family had dinner at the Emo Inn. Attending the reception were guests from Akron, Ohio, Kenora, Winnipeg, Sapawe, Rainy River, Morson, Fort Frances, and Emo area.
I had known the couple since they moved here from Devlin into the former Frank Cain residence near the former Christian Reformed Church. I knew Alice better because she used to visit the late Marg McLeod due to their mutual interest in quilt making.
We usually had something to talk about.
It was like old times reminiscing through historical events. Even now, Alice and Stewart could recall memories of past events that are exciting and interesting to listen to.
Congratulatory messages were received from Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, Gov.-General Adrienne Clarkson, the Queen, and Kenora-Rainy River MP Robert Nault.
Emo Reeve Russ Fortier also presented a plaque, on behalf of council and the citizens of Emo, recognizing the couple’s 60th anniversary.
