Couchiching rec centre opens

The Couchiching Community Rec Centre officially opened last Wednesday with dozens of people attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Children filled the basketball court with activity while adults and elders watched from the sidelines.
Couchiching rec director Shawn Jourdain said the centre will be open Monday and Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Wednesday to Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Couns. Dick Bird and Dan Mainville were on hand to cut the ribbon. Chief Chuck McPherson was unable to attend.
“We’d like to acknowledge the Ontario Native Affairs Secretariat and its program director, Tim Sim,” said Coun. Bird.
The provincial government invested $300,000 towards the $1-million facility through its “SuperBuild” funding.
“The construction of the community centre will build on recent improvements at the Couchiching First Nation and provide a focal point in the community for civic, social, cultural, and educational activities,” said Ontario Attorney General David Young, who also is the minister responsible for native affairs.
The award was considered under the Ontario Native Community Infrastructure Projects, an initiative of Ontario’s Aboriginal Community Capital Grants Program.
