Rainy River District OPP is reminding residents to lock up their property and vehicles to help reduce crime.
Overnight Thursday, officers policing Fort Frances responded to the 1300 block of Elizabeth Street East and 1300 block of Fifth Street East.
A concerned citizen called police to report some suspicious activity in their neighbourhood as three youths were observed hanging around vehicles.
As a result, officers attended the area and observed the trio.
The youths fled from police—only to be located a short time later in the area of Huffman School.
An investigation revealed the youth were responsible for breaking into several vehicles in the neighbourhood and police recovered stolen property.
Some of items included CDs, fuzzy dice, a tire air gauge, pocket knife, and loose change.
The OPP would like to make the public aware of this criminal activity, and remind everyone to “Lock It or Lose It!”
This year, Police Week in Ontario is May 15-21, with the theme being “Working Together for a Safer Community.”
The OPP recognizes community engagement is a key component of crime prevention, and that strong community partnerships are an essential element of an effective crime reduction strategy.
“Everyone in Rainy River District has an important role in making our communities safer,” said OPP detachment commander Insp. John Kendrick.
“Community safety is everyone’s responsibility and crime prevention is everyone’s business,” he stressed.
“Our partnerships with our communities are essential in preventing crime and making our citizens safer,” Insp. Kendrick added.
“The police can’t do it alone; we need the support of every resident of Ontario and this incident is a great example of how police and community worked together.”
The OPP will have a “Lock It or Lose It” display set up at the Safeway here during Police Week.
Stop by and read about the program, and let’s work together for a safer community.
