Press Release
The Rainy River District Substance Abuse Prevention Team has partnered with local pharmacies to encourage residents to clean out their medicine cabinets.
The “Medicine Cabinet Cleanout” campaign runs through Dec. 29.
Participation is easy–and it could win local residents one of two $100 gift baskets.
During the campaign, which started yesterday, residents throughout much of Rainy River District can remove all expired or unused prescription and non-prescription drugs and take them to participating area pharmacies for proper disposal.
In return, participants will receive a ballot for a chance to win a $100 gift basket courtesy of the local SAPT.
“It’s great to have so many pharmacies participating in this important campaign,” said team member Christy Herr.
“People rarely think about how dangerous the contents of the medicine cabinet can be so it’s nice to know we can help get these unused or outdated drugs out of the home and disposed of properly,” she noted.
According to the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction, Canada is the second-largest per capita consumer of prescription opioids and local health practitioners are seeing the devastation of this type of drug abuse.
For many people, the medicine cabinet becomes a collection of old and new pill bottles.
But we don’t often think about the risks associated with hoarding expired and unused prescription and non-prescription drugs.
