(KENORA, ON) – The Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is seeking the public’s assistance in investigating a mischief.
On December 30, 2023, shortly after 11:00 p.m., the Kenora OPP Detachment received information about a mischief incident at the intersection of Main Street South and Second Street South in the City of Kenora. Upon arriving at the scene, officers confirmed that a Christmas Tree had been sawed down.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing.

PEDESTRIAN FATALITY
(FORT FRANCES, ON) – The Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating fatal collision involving a pedestrian.
On December 20, 2023, shortly after 6:30 p.m., members of the Rainy River District OPP Detachment and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a serious collision involving a pedestrian on Second Street East in the Town of Fort Frances. The pedestrian was transported to hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries.
On December 24, 2023, hospital staff advised members of the Rainy River District OPP Detachment that the 29-year-old individual had succumbed to their injuries.
The OPP North West Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team and the OPP Collision Re-Constructionists are assisting in the investigation as it remains ongoing.
PEDESTRIAN FATALITY
(DRYDEN, ON) – The Dryden Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating fatal collision involving a pedestrian.
On December 30, 2023, shortly after 5:23 p.m., members of the Dryden OPP Detachment, Northwest Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Dryden Fire Service responded to a serious collision involving a pedestrian on Duke Street in the City of Dryden.
Despite life saving measures, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The OPP North West Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team and the OPP Collision Re-Constructionists are assisting in the investigation as it remains ongoing.

POLICE SEEK ASSISTANCE
(ATIKOKAN, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Atikokan are looking for public assistance to further a dangerous driving and unreported collision investigation.
On December 14, 2023, the Atikokan OPP initiated an investigation into reports of a motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Steep Rock Lake area of Atikokan.
The collision resulted in damage to the vehicle that falls into the mandatory reporting range. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
Road safety is the shared responsibility of all road users. The OPP is committed to reducing injury and death on roadways, trails, and waterways through public education and enforcement.

FATAL CRASH
(THUNDER BAY, ON) – The Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision.
On December 31, 2023, just before 11:00 a.m., members of the Thunder Bay OPP Detachment along with emergency medical services (EMS) responded to a two-vehicle collision involving two passenger vehicles on Highway 527.
As a result, one individual has been pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS.
The highway remains closed at this time. The OPP North West Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) Team and OPP Collision Re-Constructionists are assisting in the ongoing investigation.
FATAL CRASH
(HURKETT, ON) – The Nipigon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision.
On December 30, 2023, just after 2:30 pm, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with emergency medical services (EMS) and Hurkett Volunteer Fire Protection responded to a serious motor vehicle collision involving a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) and passenger motor vehicle on Highway 11/17 south of Nipigon.
As a result of the collision, the 31-year-old driver of the passenger motor vehicle was pronounced deceased.
The highway was closed in both directions at that location while the OPP North West Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) Team and OPP Collision Re-Constructionists conducted the investigation. The closure continued throughout the night.

FATAL CRASH
(BEARDMORE, ON) – The Nipigon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision.
On December 28, 2023, just before 5:00 p.m., members of the OPP along with emergency medical services (EMS) responded to a serious motor vehicle collision involving a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) and passenger motor vehicle on Highway 11 south of Beardmore.
As a result of the collision, the 56-year-old driver of the passenger motor vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS. The occupants of the CMV were transported to local hospital by EMS to be treated for minor injuries.
The highway was closed for an extended period of time; however, has since been re-opened.
The OPP North West Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) Team and OPP Collision Re-Constructionists are assisting in the investigation. Although the investigation is ongoing, charges are not expected to be laid.
CIGARETTE SMUGGLING
(FORT FRANCES, ON) – On December 20, 2023, shortly before 11:00 p.m., a member of the Rainy River District Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) while on general patrol on Second Street East in the town of Fort Frances, performed a traffic stop on a vehicle for a Highway Traffic Act infraction.
As a result, a 51-year-old of Echo Bay man has been charged under the Tobacco Tax Act, Cannabis Control Act and Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act with: Fail to surrender insurance for motor vehicle; Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available; and Possession of unmarked cigarettes.
The accused has been issued Provincial Offence Notices and more then 200 unmarked cigarettes were seized by OPP.

HOME INVASION
(SIOUX LOOKOUT, ON) – The Sioux Lookout Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a home invasion in the Municipality of Sioux Lookout and is seeking the public’s assistance.
On December 21, 2023, shortly after 3:30 a.m., members of the Sioux Lookout OPP Detachment responded to a home invasion at a residence on First Avenue North. The investigation into this incident remains ongoing at this time.
Members of the public can expect to see a larger police presence within the community. While investigators do not believe there is a threat to public safety, individuals are reminded to be aware of their surroundings at all times.

DRUG TRAFFICKING
(DRYDEN, ON) – An investigation led by the Dryden Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), with the assistance of the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service, has led to charges being laid against a local resident.
On December 20, 2023, shortly after 2:00 p.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on West River Road in the City of Dryden. Through investigation, illicit substances suspected to be cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine, and morphine, along with Canadian currency were located.
Following the traffic stop, a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act search warrant was executed at a home on West River Road, City of Dryden, where two prohibited weapons, ammunition, and further evidence of drug trafficking were located.
As a result of the investigation, a 45-year-old Dryden man, has been arrested and charged with the following offences under the Criminal Code and Controlled Drugs and Substances Act: Possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking (4 counts); Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5000; Unauthorized possession of a weapon (2 counts); Possession of ammunition contrary to a Prohibition Order; Possession of a prohibited weapon contrary to a Prohibition Order (2 counts).
The accused remanded into custody at the Kenora District Jail where they are scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice – Kenora on December 27, 2023.
