Chariot races have been selected as the main entertainment of this year’s Emo Fair in August.
Following on the heels of last year’s horse rodeo, teams of horses–with chariots in tow–will gallop around the oval of the Emo speedway in both flat and Ben Hur races.
“They’re teams of two and four horses hitched on the chariots and they race. It can be pretty exciting,” said Emo Fair board president Gary Judson.
The chariot races were the feature entertainment more than 20 years ago, noted Judson, who wanted a change in the show while sticking to the theme of the fair.
“I figured, well, I might as well try something different and it’s an agricultural fair so having horses would be good,” he reasoned.
During their April meeting, the board also decided to hire Edmonton fiddler “Arny the Uke” to perform throughout the fairgrounds during both days in August.
“Name that tune” and the talent show also will be returning for 2001.
“I think we’re putting more money into it so maybe we’ll get more talent,” said Judson.
And the midway will be back despite concerns new legislation would affect their visiting the province. “He’s promising some new rides so it should be good,” said Judson.
Meanwhile, other spring meetings are taking place, including a communications workshop April 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Morley municipal office in Stratton and the 4-H leaders’ training workshop May 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Emo Inn.
