U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the International Falls port-of-entry arrested a 58-year-old Canadian citizen from Benyks Point, Manitoba for failing to stop for inspection at the border crossing.
The person was arrested for driving under the influence and a civil penalty levied against them.
The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. last Thursday when officers spotted a blue Chevrolet pickup travelling southbound from Canada in the northbound lane of travel against on-coming vehicle traffic.
CBP officers followed the pickup until the driver eventually stopped about half-a-mile south of the port-of-entry.
The International Falls Police department arrived on scene and took the man into custody for driving under the influence.
The CBP seized the subject’s vehicle, and assessed a civil penalty for failing to present the vehicle and all persons and merchandise on board for inspection.
“Individuals that attempt to avoid the inspection process, and endanger the lives of other drivers, will be dealt with in accordance to CBP laws and regulations,” said Pembina Area Port Director Jason Schmelz.
Travellers who engage in “port running” face serious consequences for their actions.
A civil penalty of at least $5,000, and up to $10,000, may be levied, and the vehicle may be seized.
Individuals also may face criminal prosecution.
