Charges laid after crash into police cruiser

(KENORA, ON) – While on general patrol in Kenora, an officer was struck by a vehicle, leading to criminal charges being laid against the impaired driver.

On December 26, 2024, shortly after 8:00 pm, in the downtown core of Kenora, a member of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that had collided with the officer’s cruiser. No injuries were reported.

Investigation determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol, and an approved screening device (ASD) test was administered. The driver failed the test and was arrested and transported to the Kenora Detachment where additional breath testing was completed.    

A 21-years-old man from Kenora, Ontario is charged criminally with:

  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused was further charged with:

  • Disobey stop sign – fail to stop, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act
  • Driver motor vehicle – no licence, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Kenora Ontario Court of Justice on January 23, 2025, to answer to the criminal charges.

ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL

(Thunder Bay, ON) – On December 22nd, 2024, members of the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were looking for a stolen vehicle from a local dining establishment. The vehicle was located in the parking lot of the same establishment with the driver asleep behind the wheel. The vehicle was deemed not to be stolen.

The driver was a local 56-year-old female. Police believed the driver to be impaired. The accused was charged with Operation while impaired.

The OPP wants to remind everyone to drive safe and sober. Winter driving can be especially hazardous. Stay safe and enjoy the holidays.

IMPAIRED SNOW MOBILE OPERATOR

(DRYDEN, ON) – Members of the Dryden Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment have arrested and charged one individual with impaired operation.

On December 27, 2024, at approximately 12:30 a.m. members of the Dryden OPP Detachment were conducting general patrol duties and observed an individual driving a MSV (motorized snow vehicle) without a helmet who proceeded to collide with a snowbank at a high rate of speed on Casimir Avenue, in the City of Dryden. Fortunately, the individual suffered no injuries as a result of the collision.  

Through investigation, it was determined that the driver was impaired by alcohol.

As a result, a 22-year-old Dryden man was placed under arrest and transported to the Dryden OPP for further testing. The accused faces the following charges under the Criminal Code and Motorized Snow Mobile Act:

  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
  • Fail to wear a proper helmet
  • Careless driving

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Dryden January 27, 2025.

Motorists who drive impaired by alcohol or drugs are subject to drivers licence suspensions, fines, vehicle impoundments, criminal records and increased insurance costs. Please drive responsibly and don’t take drugs or drink and drive.

IMPAIRED CHARGES LAID AFTER CALL FROM LOCAL BUSINESS

(DRYDEN, ON) – Members of the Dryden Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment have arrested and charged one individual with impaired operation.

On December 24, 2024, at approximately 3:30 a.m. members of the Dryden OPP Detachment received reports of an impaired driver leaving a local business in the City of Dryden. Police patrolled the area and located the subject at a residence on Mary Avenue.

While speaking with the suspect, the investigating officer observed signs of intoxication and conducted an impaired driving investigation.

As a result of the investigation, it was determined that the subject was the driver of the motor vehicle and had been impaired by alcohol/drug. The driver was placed under arrest and transported to the Dryden OPP for further testing.

A 45-year-old Dryden man has been arrested and charged under the Criminal Code with:

  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Dryden January 27, 2025.

OPP LAY DOMESTIC ASSAULT CHARGES  

(DRYDEN, ON) – Members of the Ignace Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment have arrested and charged one individual with spousal assault. 

On December 17, 2024, at approximately 10:30 a.m., members of the Ignace OPP Detachment responded to an incident on Brich Drive, in the Township of Ignace.

As a result of the investigation, a 21-year-old has been charged under the Criminal Code with:

  • Assault – spousal (two counts)
  • Unlawfully in Dwelling House (two counts)
  • Assault

The accused has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora December 18, 2024.

The OPP will not release names to protect the identity of the victim.
