The countdown to the centennial of Fort Frances in 2003 is on! May 27 marked 100 weeks until the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the community on April 11, 1903.
The Fort Frances centennial planning committee has launched a contest for a logo and slogan to use in promoting 2003. On Canada Day, the winning entries will be announced.
What better way to celebrate being a Canadian than starting at home with recognizing the community you live in.
The committee also is asking for 100 ideas for celebrating the centennial. Submission boxes are located at the museum, library, Civic Centre, and Memorial Sports Centre.
Local clubs and organizations are being asked to assist in the celebrations by organizing activities and assisting financially. Interested citizens are invited to join the committee to ensure 2003 becomes a year to remember.
The Fort Frances Centennial Book Committee continues to solicit submissions for the Community Scrapbook. Individuals, organizations, and businesses are encouraged to compile their history in the community.
The history book committee has arranged for well-known local author Neil McQuarrie to write the book.
The committee also will spend the next month gathering information on Fort Frances as it was before 1910. If you have anything to share, please call the museum.
As we start the journey 100 years back in time, a reflection on the year just past shows how much the community has grown and changed in a short period of time.
To think that the Memorial Sports Centre, a community dream just years ago, is now a reality. Do you even recall what the current site looked like just months ago?
A similar vision captured the imagination of the community more than 50 years ago when the original Memorial Arena was just a dream.
Submit your story of “the first skate” on either of these brand new ice facilities to the Community History Scrapbook!
