Back in 2002, then Heritage minister Sheila Copps declared the second Sunday of June to be celebrated henceforth as Canadian Rivers Day.
And as we have the greatest river—the Rainy River—right on our doorstep, you are invited to join us at the Sorting Gap Marina/Nelson Street Park on June 12 from noon-6 p.m. to celebrate.
Rodney Brown will perform at 2 p.m. There also will be heritage canoe/pontoon boat rides, a water circus, children’s arts/crafts and activities, scavenger hunts, and give-aways, and tours of the “Hallett” out at Pither’s Point.
Also be sure to sign up your team of four for the Rainy River Canoe Challenge.
Beginning at the beach by the “Hallett,” participants will paddle to the Sorting Gap Marina launch, then portage your canoe to the Nelson Street park.
Flights of eight will leave on the hour, with a final flight of all the winners going at 5 p.m.
Canoes will be provided, and flight times may vary according to the number registered.
