Celebrate autumn scenery this weekend

Voyageurs National Park will welcome autumn with a number of special programs planned for this weekend, including talks, walks, canoe trips, and other activities.
“Autumn Rendezvous” will take place at the Ash River Visitor Center on Saturday (Aug. 27) and at the Kabetogama Lake Visitor Center on Sunday (Aug. 28).

•Scene Search (10 a.m.-3 p.m.)—Ash River Visitor Center
Think you know the park pretty well? We will show you eight photos of the park and give you a list of where they might have been taken.
Drive or hike to the exact location, and write down the symbol on the flag you find when you reach the exact spot. Collect a prize when you complete your search.
This activity is free.
•Scene Stealer (11 a.m.-2 p.m.)—Ash River Visitor Center
Wear your favourite scene for all to see. Pose for a photo in front of Voyageurs’ outstanding scenery and we will help you make a custom T-shirt to take with you.
This activity is free, but limited to first 20 people.
•Sketching by Canoe (11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.)—Ash River Visitor Center
Join a naturalist as you paddle out to a scenic spot, then pick up a sketch book and record what you see. We provide the sketch books, canoes, paddles, and life jackets.
Bring a lunch.
This activity also is free, but limited to 11 participants. It also is dependent on the weather.
•Drawing from Nature (1-2 p.m.)—Ash River Visitor Center
Artist Tim Terrell will show you how everyone has sufficient drawing skills to identify plants. He has been an exhibiting artist for more than 30 years, and holds degrees in art and design, painting and drawing, and photography.
This activity is free, and the materials are provided.
•What am I seeing? (2-3 p.m.)—Ash River Visitor Center
Learn to read the landscape, including the geology and the plant communities that exist here.

•Art and the National Parks (2-3 p.m.)—Kabetogama Lake Visitor Center
Join artist Terry Millikan for a slide presentation showing the history of artists in the public lands. Learn how their art shaped our history.
•The View from a North Canoe (2-3 p.m.)—Kabetogama Lake Visitor Center
Paddle back in history aboard a north canoe. Learn the voyageur paddle salute and explore the life of a voyageur.
This activity (weather permitting) is limited to eight participants, with the minimum age being five. It also is recommended the participants know how to swim.
All of these above activities are free.
