The Rainy River Cattlemen’s Association will be filling up the Stratton sales yard with about 800 cattle April 18, making it two spring sales in a row for them.
The sale will start at 9:30 a.m., with cattle being brought into the pens the day before.
Sales manager Russell Richards said beef prices are looking strong right now, making the April sale quite timely for area producers.
“We’ve got a lot of interesting cattle,” he added, noting the quality lined up for the sale so far seems to be very good.
Last year was the first time in a long while that the RRCA held a spring sale, which was deemed successful. About 440 head of cattle went through the pens last spring.
A consignment sale also was held.
But with the number of cattle expected to be nearly double this year, Richards doubted if there would be consignment sale this year at all.
“It would be a small one,” he said, if one did go ahead.
Most of the cattle at this sale will be quite light, which is typical for a spring sale, Richards said.
Now the only thing left to do is go out and tell the buyers to be in Stratton–and bring their cheque books. And given the success of last year’s sale under their belt, Richards didn’t think that would to hard to do.
“I’ll start [going out] this week,” he said. “I’ll have my normal buyers, and I’ll try to add a few to it.”
