Catholic board hires new director

The Northwest Catholic District School Board has hired Dr. Laurie J. Bizero as its director of education and secretary, effective Aug. 1.
Dr. Bizero comes with extensive experience gathered over 23 years in education. She has been a teacher, department head, vice-principal, and principal, and currently is a superintendent of schools with the Ottawa-Carleton Catholic District School Board.
She holds a doctorate in education and has taught teacher candidates at a faculty of education at the university level.
She also brings a wealth of knowledge on curriculum development and implementation and is, at present, responsible for the Continuing and Community Education Department of her school board.
Dr. Bizero has been described as a committed Catholic leader who is very active in her parish life as a lector, Eucharistic minister, and as a member of the parish council.
“Perhaps most impressive is her work with needy schools,” said her current director. “She is a tireless champion for kids from disadvantaged backgrounds.”
Board chair Gerry Rousseau said they are pleased to attract an educator of Dr. Bizero’s calibre to Northwestern Ontario.
“We were impressed with her enthusiasm to learn about our schools and communities, and are confident she will provide excellent Catholic leadership to our organization,” he added.
The Northwest Catholic District School Board offers Catholic education to roughly 1,500 students, with schools in Fort Frances, Rainy River/Stratton, Dryden, and Sioux Lookout.
Dr. Bizero will replace the current director, John Madigan, who is retiring in August.
