The annual “Castin’ For Cash” bass tournament at Lake Despair Lodge was another success this past Friday and Saturday, with a record weight brought in by the top team.
Jon Evans and Gus McFaddin captured first place—and the $5,000 prize—with a total weight of 29.39 pounds.
Devlin residents definitely showed off their fishing ability, too, as second place went to Kelvin Caul and Ted Heyens (with 28.57 pounds), followed by the husband-and-wife team of Doug and Solly McBride in third and the father-and-son duo of Ralph and Scott Galusha in fourth.
An added feature at this year’s tournament was the presentation of the Wayne Beacham Memorial Award, which went to the top team with an angler under the age of 15.
Chase Curtis, eight, and his dad, Corey, wound up winning the inaugural award, taking home a fishing rod and a trophy.
Lake Despair Lodge added $400 to this prize division, as well.
Bill and Nell Godin also honoured their many volunteers as this was their 10th anniversary of staging “Castin’ For Cash” and many of them have been there for all 10 years.
It was a great time as always, and I’m sure this tournament will just keep getting better.

Sympathy is extended to the Booth families in the passing of Ian’s brother-in-law, Monty Brunwin, on Saturday in Thunder Bay after a short bout with cancer.
Monty was Christine’s husband. Many Burriss residents will remember Christine as she grew up in the area.
Your community is thinking of you at this sad and difficult time.

Hopefully a few people noticed that I didn’t have my weekly column in the paper for the past two weeks as I was visiting my son and his family in St. Thomas, Ont.
But I’m back until October, when I return to St. Thomas to celebrate the first birthday of my grandson, Orrin.
