Police have charged a canoeist they helped locate earlier this week after further investigation revealed he had committed several crimes.
On Wednesday around 9:50 a.m., officers from the Thunder Bay OPP were advised of a canoe that was located partially-submerged in Wild Goose Bay in the Municipality of Shuniah.
Officers responded and observed the canoe to contain camping gear and other articles, but there was no paddle or lifejacket with the canoe.
Shortly after, a lifejacket and paddle were located in the bay.
Following an extensive search, the male associated to the canoe was located in Shuniah around 2:10 p.m.
But further investigation revealed he had committed a break-in and theft to a building in Shuniah and also stole a canoe from a local residence.
The 27-year-old Winnipeg man was charged break and enter, possession of stolen property under $5,000, and failure to comply with a probation order.
He was taken to the Thunder Bay District Jail following a video court appearance.
