Get out your heels and grab a Cosmopolitan!
This November, ladies in Fort Frances will be able to feel like that glamorous New Yorker, Carrie Bradshaw, as the Canadian Cancer Society brings in “Hope and the City”—a fun, flirty, and fabulous event to benefit women’s cancer research.
“It’s a play, of course, on the show ‘Sex and the City,’” explained organizer Jennifer Anderson, noting similar events have been done in Kenora, Dryden, and Thunder Bay, as well as elsewhere across Ontario.
She said while “Relay for Life” events support all cancer research, funds raised from the “Hope and the City” event are earmarked specifically for women’s cancers, such as breast, cervical, ovarian, and uterine cancers.
“I find everyone says there is nothing to do here so given the opportunity to have a night out for the girls, I thought, ‘Let’s try it,’” said Anderson, adding the idea for the event was suggested by the new fundraising co-ordinator in Thunder Bay.
“Doesn’t everybody want to get dressed up and put on their dancing shoes?” she reasoned.
The event is set for Friday, Nov. 23 beginning at 6 p.m. at La Place Rendez-Vous.
Information regarding ticket prices, and where and when they’ll be available, has not been confirmed yet but should be determined later this week.
“We’re still planning and organizing so not everything is nailed down yet, but we’ve got plenty of ideas and hope it will be a great event,” Anderson enthused.
She noted some details of the “Hope and the City” include guests being greeted by a paparazzi welcome as they walk the “pink” carpet to the main entrance of the hall upon their arrival.
“There will be glamour stations and your ticket will include a stop at one of the glamour stations, where you can get your hair fluffed, your nails done, get your make-up done, maybe get a back massage, something like that,” she explained.
Anderson noted the glamour stations will be open throughout the night if guests want to get more than one thing done.
There also will be a silent auction, possibly a fashion show, some vendors who sell items geared toward women, as well as other “fun” fundraising antics.
As well, the evening will include a luminary ceremony in honour or memory of women who have had cancer, using pink glowsticks instead of the luminary bags.
The committee planning the event is looking for more people to help out. Volunteers are needed for set-up, ticket sales, etc.
