Press Release
NDP MPP for Kenora-Rainy River, Sarah Campbell called on the Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, Bill Mauro, to listen to the united Rainy River district that rallied yesterday to tell the Minister to take immediate action to save their mill.
“The mayor of Fort Frances, Roy Avis, Couchiching First Nation Chief Sara Mainville, ENGAGE Young Professionals and residents across the Rainy River district joined together today to call on Minister Mauro to keep the Fort Frances mill open,” Campbell said.
“The Minister needs to act now as there is little time left before the winter freeze sets in and destroys what’s left of the mill,” she added. “Minister Mauro has the power to ensure the Fort Frances mill stays open.
“He needs to uphold his obligations as Minister to reallocate wood rights so the local forest continues to benefit the operation of this local mill,” she remarked.
Campbell has been putting pressure on Minister Mauro at Queen’s Park to listen to the Rainy River district and keep the mill in Fort Frances open.
“The minister knows that 1,000 jobs in the Rainy River district depend on this mill and the entire town of Fort Frances depends on this mill for its survival,” she noted.
“He has a duty to the people of Ontario to preserve and create jobs in the forestry sector.
“He needs to do the right thing and properly allocate wood rights to benefit the local workforce,” Campbell said.
Campbell is circulating a petition to save the Fort Frances mill. The petition is available online at: Facebook.com/Sarah4NWO
