Our Lady of the Way School was as busy as a bee-hive last Wednesday.
OPP Cst. Greg Johnson was listening to essays written by students in the Grade 5/6 class as part of the Drug Awareness and Resistance Education (D.AR.E.) program.
Several students made presentations that Cst. Johnson thought were well-researched and which showed they were alert and curious on the subject.
The school’s D.A.R.E. graduation ceremony is slated for tomorrow (June 10) at which time awards will be presented to the winning essay writers.
Meanwhile, in the school gym, author Veronica Charles was giving a presentation on her stories which are based on legendary instances.
Charles was a popular singer/songwriter before coming to Canada. She had been born in Prague, Czechoslovakia but now lives in Toronto with her husband, three children, and a cat named “Emerald.”
And Mrs. Budreau’s class, was Learning Through the Arts, led by Joan Halonene, a drama teacher from Thunder Bay.
The Grade 3/4 class will be giving a drama performance next Wednesday (June 16).
Finally, the mural located in the school library is called “Garden of Eden.” The creation of Laura Haner, Dianna Gamsby, and Sue Vanderbrand, it reflects on springtime with all its beauty.
The handprints making up the flowers depict children in kindergarten through Grade 3, the leaves on trees students in Grades 4-7, and the butterflies Grade 8 students and retired school teachers from OLW.
The rising sun refers to all the school’s teachers and assistants.
In other news at OLW, Grades 7/8 students, along with chaperones, participated in a highway clean-up on Thursday, May 27. They called it “Move to the Moon 2004—A School Challenge.”
In all, 37 large garbage bags were collected with 26 people taking part. They walked about four km each for a total of 104 km.
Students in Grades 1-4 also took part by skipping rope for a half-hour, with 30 students skipping for a total of 900 minutes. OLOW is now a registered participant.
The Principal’s Awards for April were presented to Emily O’Connor, Karlene Pollard, Kelsey Tesarsky, PJ Sopotiuck, and Dayna Vlotaros.
And the Grade 7/8 class trip, slated for June 15-16, will see students visit the Winnipeg Museum, aviation museum, planetarium, and science gallery, as well as take in a movie at the IMAX threatre.
