Brown given seniors’ award

Evelyn Brown was honoured as 1997 Senior of the Year for La Vallee in recognition of her dedication to the community.
A very quiet person by nature, but someone who loves people, Brown visits the sick and shut-ins in the hospital or their homes, taking along baking. She also volunteers and donates for the hospital auxiliary.
Brown was a member of the Devlin Women’s Institute for numerous years until that chapter closed.
She also is very active serving the Guthrie United Church and United Church Women (U.C.W.), giving many hours of quilting. In the past, she filled the role of president and secretary for several years.
The community has benefited from her contributions to the Devlin Community Club, where Brown was always ready to lend a hand or make donations.
Brown worked as a custodian for the Fort Frances-Rainy River Board of Education for 21 years, giving of herself and providing extras which were above and beyond her normal duties.
She recently was recognized for her generous 25 years of annual canvassing for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Brown is always there to lend a helping hand, and certainly without thought for personal praise or recognition.
Each year, municipalities in Ontario have an opportunity to honour one outstanding local senior in an award program established by the province in 1994.
About 400 seniors have been honoured to date.
Recipients are individuals who, after age 65, have enriched the social, cultural, or civic life of their community–without thought of personal or financial gain.
The award certificate, provided by the Ontario government, is inscribed with the recipient’s name and signed by Lt. Gov. Hilary M. Weston along with the minister without portfolio responsible for seniors and the head of the local municipal council.
