Books wanted for Alzheimer’s sale

Book worms will be happy to know the Kenora-Rainy River branch of the Alzheimer Society of Canada’s fifth-annual book sale is coming up Feb. 26-28 at Revco Carpet here.
But in order to have a sale, organizers need book donations. As such, the public is being asked to start looking over those shelves and picking out books they can live without.
Margaret Schonewille, executive director of the local Alzheimer Society, said she’s looking for good to excellent quality books, and won’t accept encyclopedias, textbooks, Reader’s Digest condensed books, and magazines.
She noted she’s gotten some musty tomes in the past, adding a good way to gauge whether a book is suitable for the sale is whether or not you would want it your own home.
Eager donors are asked to wait until after Feb. 17 to drop off their books at Revco Carpet (950 Fifth St. W.) since they only have so much room to accommodate them prior to the sale.
The popular sale will take place at Revco Carpet on Thursday, Feb. 26 and Friday, Feb. 27 during store hours, and again on Saturday, Feb. 28 until 1 p.m.
The public can drop by the store, fill a bag with books, and then make a donation to the Alzheimer Society.
Schonewille said the used book sale has become an annual tradition that many readers look forward to.
“Even when I was collecting prizes [for last month’s chefs’ dinner], people were talking about it,” she noted, adding last year’s sale here raised $1,874.
Like all the other fundraising events for the local Alzheimer Society, proceeds from the sale will go towards further promotion of Alzheimer awareness and education in both districts—not to a provincial or national organization.
In related news, Schonewille said she’s still looking for photos of Fort Frances to include in the Alzheimer Society’s next cash calendar.
She wants pictures that showcase the Kenora and Rainy River districts. There is no payment or prize if your photo is used, but you will receive credit for it—and your photo will be seen by everyone who buys a calendar.
The deadline for photo entries is Feb. 20. The calendar then will be put together, printed, and ready for sale by April.
To find out how to get an entry form to submit your photo, call Schonewille at 1-800-682-0245 or e-mail her at alzheimers@kenora.com (while Schonewille will be away next week, she will contact you as soon she gets back).
Further down the road, the annual “Walk for Memories” fundraiser is slated for Saturday, May 23 in Rainy River, starting at the Royal Canadian Legion, and again Sunday, May 24 leaving from the Super 8 Motel here in Fort Frances.
A “tag day” also is planned for Friday, June 19, with volunteers needed.
Let the Alzheimer Society know if you can help with this event by calling 1-800-682-0245.
