With the Victoria Day long weekend upon us, members of the Rainy River District Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind boaters to take appropriate safety measures when exploring local waters this weekend and beyond. “Safe Boating Awareness Week” spans the week of May 18-24.
Always consider these important points before heading out on the water:
- Always wear a PFD or lifejacket;
- Boat sober;
- Take a boating course;
- Be Prepared, both you and your vessel; and
- Be wary of the dangers of cold water immersion
Whether you are on a boat, kayak, or personal watercraft, there are safety regulations that govern what safety equipment is needed in each vessel. Review the legislation prior to going out to make sure that you are prepared.
Members of the OPP will be out conducting patrols of the local waterways conducting compliance and sobriety checks over the weekend. If you know of someone operating a boat or vessel while impaired by drug or alcohol, call 911.
