When I last talked to Colleen Vennechenko, she told me that registration began Monday for Emo’s “Biggest Loser” contest and that 25 people already had signed up.
Registration is $10, and those interested can sign up at the Corner Closet in Emo. This contest is open to all ages, not just a certain age group.
People also have signed up from Devlin and Barwick, so whatever your age and wherever you live, as long as you want to improve your health and get fit, this is a great opportunity—while maybe making some cash on the side.
The event will start this coming Monday (Jan. 31) and run until Spring Fever Days in April. For more information, contact Colleen or Marg Heyens at the Corner Closet in Emo.

“Pop You Winter Blues” is the title of a concert and silent auction being held this Friday (Jan. 28) at 7 p.m. at Donald Young School here in Emo.
The very talented Borderland Community Orchestra will be performing for your entertainment while you make some bids on all the amazing items that have been donated for this fundraising event.
There are items from fishing rods and reels to massages and tanning sessions up for grabs, and maybe even something donated by the Borderland Thunders for all you hockey fans out there.
Tickets purchased in advance (at the Northwoods Gallery in Fort Frances, and at Cloverleaf, the Emo Public Library, and DYS) could win you a gift to take home.
The evening is sure to be a huge success and one you won’t want to miss!

Emo council will hold its next regular meeting tonight (Jan. 26) at 7 p.m. at the municipal office. The general public is welcome to attend.

The Women’s Institute museum in Emo currently is looking for new members. Anyone in the district wishing to help this non-profit organization can contact Ruth Brett (488-5360) or Sheri Stamarski (486-3535).

For women looking for a way to get active (and out of the house), you can play basketball at Crossroads School in Devlin on Thursdays from 6:45-8 p.m.
No fee is required, and you do not have to be a pro. It’s just to have some fun.
Those interested can call Dale Allan for more information, or you can just show up at the school on Thursday night.

Emo has had to say goodbye to its Lions Club, which was formed around 1980 and closed last fall.
Over the years, the club has done many things for our community, such as creating the Lions Park along the riverfront, providing money to families who lost their homes to fire, eyeglasses, contributing great sums of money to the Riverside Foundation for Health Care, and helping tremendously with the purchases of the elevator at the Emo hospital.
Unfortunately, the club also saw a dramatic decrease in members over the years and no longer could function with the few left.
They hope to one day see the younger generation take over and volunteer their time to begin again. Until then, I believe the Emo Lions Club will be surely missed and thank members for their years of dedication.

The highway from Fort Frances to Kenora was officially opened July 1, 1936 with then Ontario Premier Mitchell Hepburn cutting the ribbon in a downpour of rain.
He then proposed that the new highway be called “The Heenan Highway.”
