Be wary of ice conditions

With spring quickly approaching, the OPP would like to remind people that ice conditions are very unpredictable at this time of year.
Snowmobiling is fun, but did you know that drowning is the leading cause of snowmobile deaths?
If it’s necessary to ride on the ice, always check the conditions first and don’t trust the judgment of others—you are responsible for your own safe snowmobiling.
Also consider wearing a buoyant snowmobile suit.
The safest snowmobiling rule is never to cross lakes or rivers. Besides the danger of plunging through, you have far less traction for starting, turning, and stopping on ice than on snow.
Statistics shows that the safest place to snowmobile is on groomed trails. So whenever and wherever practical, ride these.
And remember that alcohol and snowmobiling simply do not mix. Be smart—ride safely.
