The OPP once again would like to remind the public to be skeptical of telemarketers soliciting money on behalf of charitable organizations and individuals who promise large monetary rewards for assisting them with bank transfers.
The public also should be cautious of callers identifying themselves as representatives from financial institutions conducting customer satisfaction surveys or financial planners.
It can be extremely difficult to determine the legitimacy of a telemarketer when the caller is pressured into making quick decisions.
Further, scam artists have the capability to produce authentic-looking e-mails and correspondence.
Remember that you should never have to provide any personal banking information to anyone over the phone or Internet.
Don’t be afraid to take the time to research for yourself if the telemarketer is legitimate.
If you think you are a victim, contact your local police service or Phone Busters at 1-888-495-8501, or visit www.phonebusters.com on the Internet.
