Be safe when you bike: OPP

Now that spring has arrived the Fort Frances OPP would like to remind the public about some bike safety tips.
Bicycles are governed by the rules of the road as outlined in the Highway Traffic Act. As such, bicyclists are required to travel on the roadway, with the flow of traffic, must signal their intentions and must wear a bike helmet if under the age of 18.
Bicyclists are also governed by Municipal Traffic Control by-laws, specifically By-Law 38/96 which states;
“No person shall drive a bicycle within any sidewalk area or on a curb.”
Bicycling is fun and a great way to stay in shape, but road safety skills are an essential element of bicycle safety.
The Fort Frances OPP, in partnership with Canadian Tire, will be providing a “Bike Rodeo” on June 18th from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Canadian Tire parking lot.
Officers will review rules of the road with participants and then run them through a rodeo scoring their abilities. Prizes will be awarded in a number of different categories.
Parents and children alike will benefit from this educational and interactive activity.
