Bass tourney a go for 2002

Fifty teams left the Lake Despair shore bright and early last Saturday and Sunday in hopes of catching the “big one” (or rather, several big ones) as they competed in the first-annual “Castin’ for Cash” bass tournament hosted by Nell and Bill Godin of Lake Despair Lodge.
And from all reports, everyone had a great time. Whether fishing, being a spectator, or a volunteer, not enough praise could be given to Nell and Bill, plus all their helpers, as angler after angler lauded the efforts that ended in a successful weekend.
Several requested another tournament next year, and Godin said it’s already a go.
Congratulations to Corey Calder and Dave Woodgate, who took home the $1,000 first prize with a 21.05-pound total over the two days (10 fish).
As an added note of interest, it is likely several “big fish” got away (just ask any of the anglers taking part). But one rather big, 190-pound object was caught by a pretty colourful fish hook–and he wasn’t going anywhere.
Tim Mutz, who was fishing with his son, Ryan, was caught in the ear and the hook remained there all day (it did look kind of cute on him). The OPP offered to remove it but they didn’t have the proper equipment.
Ryan made it known, when he was at the mike during the weigh-in, that it wasn’t his fault. He just did what he was told–it was Tim who goofed up.
The incident certainly made for a lot of conversation, and in this case, the biggest one didn’t get away. Once again, proof that Devlin folks “march to the beat of a different drummer.”

On Thursday, Good Vibrations will meet the Blue Zones at 6 p.m., with Variety Pack against the Young and Restless at 7:30. Then on Friday, it’s the River Rats versus Chicken Hawks (6 p.m.) and Jokers against Teeples (7:30).
Action will continue through Sunday at the Devlin ball diamond.
There also will be food booths, a beer garden, and a dance on Saturday night. Come out and enjoy this event. Good luck to all the teams!]

Husband: “I’m going to spread some manure on the lawn.”
Daughter (whispering to her mother): “I wish you could teach Dad to say ‘fertilizer’ instead of that awful word, ‘manure.’”
Mother (whispering back): “Let’s leave well enough alone. It took me 25 years to get him to say ‘manure.’”
