A group of Fort High art students still are raving about their trip to Greece last month.
The 10-day excursion consisted of different tours throughout the islands of Greece, with many stops along the way to take in the beauty.
The first two days were spent in Athens, where the students took in the markets and the acropolis.
They also toured the Museum of the Acropolis and the National Archeology Museum, and journeyed up the tallest hill in Athens for a fantastic city view.
The group then boarded a cruise ship that took them to a few islands on the Aegean Sea. They also stopped in Turkey, where they toured the town of Kusadasi and got to see Ephesus.
“We had the whole place to ourselves,” enthused FFHS art teacher and chaperone Tracey Rob.
“There was maybe 20 other people there, so we got to see every detail.”
After Ephesus, they went to a rug show, where they saw the many different styles or rugs and a lot of hand-made artwork.
Later they went to Patmos, and could relax and swim in the Aegean as well as enjoy coffee from coffee shops on the island.
The next day was spent at Rhodes, where they toured the city that was built with a castle surrounding it.
The group then spent the day in Crete, where they got to visit the Palace of Knossos. A highlight of this tour was being able to go into the labyrinth, where the Minotaur was supposed to be.
After touring the palace, the group went to Santorini and travelled atop a mountain to capture a wonderful view. Many students really enjoyed this excursion because they got to ride donkeys up to the top.
“My donkey was really slow,” joked FFHS art teacher and chaperone Owen Johnston.
“I started in the middle of the group and ended up at the very end by the time we reached the top.”
The group then took the cruise back to Athens and visited the site of the Oracle of Delphi, where they toured the Museum of Delphi and got to visit the actual site where the oracle made her predictions.
Everyone taking part in the trip thought it was a great adventure.
“It was really fun going to Greece and seeing everything,” enthused Jessica Ash.
“From the monuments to the temples, it was amazing!”
Students all loved seeing history and art come to life. A lot recognized a few of the different historic sites they visited or saw from learning about them in history or art/history class.
Both teacher reps and every students who went on the Greece trip will tell you it was a success.
“I was looking forward to going to Greece with my friends for my senior year and it was just the best experience to have,” noted Grade 12 student Meghan Metke.
Everyone enjoyed their time and they said already miss it.
In fact, Rob and Johnston already have started talking about where they’d like to go on the next art trip two years from now.
Italy has been discussed and the topic of Egypt remains in play. The trip was going to be to Egypt this year but with the ongoing political unrest there, the teacher reps decided upon Greece—and both were very happy with the outcome.
The Greece trip was a fun adventure for everyone who participated in it, and is highly-recommended by the students and teachers to anyone planning a trip.
