Angler fined over blaze

An Illinois angler has been fined $1,000 for allowing his shore lunch fire to get out of control and burn three hectares of forest.
Michael Santarelli, 56, of Orland Park pleaded guilty to starting a fire under unsafe conditions.
Court heard that on June 1, 2003, Santarelli and his angling party started a fire to cook a shore lunch on Keezhik Lake, a remote fly-in lake about 255 km northwest of Geraldton.
After Santarelli failed to put the fire out, it spread to the surrounding area. Ministry of Natural Resources fire crews extinguished the blaze.
Justice of the Peace Bruce Leaman heard the case Feb. 11 in Thunder Bay.
