Alzheimer Society staging plenty of fundraisers here

Whether it’s fundraiser dinners or a penny weigh-in, the Alzheimer Society of Kenora-Rainy River District has several events planned this month, which also is known as “Alzheimer Awareness Month.”
For instance, tickets are still available for the local Alzheimer Society’s second-annual “Chefs’ Charitable Dinner and Auction,” which is slated for Sunday, Jan. 21 at the Fort Frances Curling Club.
Margaret Schonewille, executive director of the Alzheimer Society of Kenora-Rainy River District, said yesterday some tickets are still left, but that those interested in attending had better get their tickets A.S.A.P.
As previously reported, the dinner will feature a gourmet buffet prepared by chefs from both the Rainy River and Kenora districts, with food donated by area businesses.
Schonewille said the menu just keeps on growing as more and more chefs and suppliers get on board. While too lengthy to list here, it will feature a wide variety of appetizers, entrées, and desserts.
“It’s going to be good,” she enthused. “The food is getting really exciting.
“It’s going to be lots of food,” she added. “You thought you had a full plate last year, but it’s going to be twice as full.”
The event also will feature a silent and live auction, with the latter being conducted by Atikokan auctioneer Lanny Cross.
Any local businesses interested in donating items to the fundraiser are encouraged to call Schonewille at 1-800-682-0245. She’ll also be in town next week to visit.
Tickets for the dinner are available at the Adventure Inn, La Flambée, Lee Garden, and the Emo Inn, or by calling the Alzheimer Society at 1-800-682-0245.
They cost $50 each (buyers will get a $25 tax receipt).
The inaugural “Chefs’ Charitable Dinner” here raised $4,417.
In other Alzheimer fundraising news, the annual “Penny for your thoughts” penny weigh-in fundraiser will be held here Jan. 19-20 at Canadian Tire.
The public is welcome to drop by with collected pennies, donate them, and have them weighed. This will run from noon-5 p.m. on the Friday, and from 9 a.m.-noon on the Saturday.
Those who turn in the greatest weights will be eligible for prizes.
About $500 worth of copper was donated at the last penny weigh-in here.
As well, the annual roast beef fundraiser dinner for the Alzheimer Society will be held at the Rainy River Legion on Saturday, Jan, 20.
Tickets for this event, which also will feature a penny table and the “Chairs for Charity” auction, cost $10 each and are available at the Rainy River Record office.
Last year’s dinner there raised close to $2,000.
And finally, a third-annual book sale will be held at Revco Carpet here Feb. 8-10. But those wanting to donate books can start rounding them up now and drop them off there beginning Jan. 22 (but no sooner as they don’t have room for all the books right now).
Last year’s book sale here brought in more than $2,300.
