Described as “A time for sharing the pain as well as the hope of the holiday season,” the annual “Longest Night” service at Knox United Church will take place this Sunday (Dec. 17) at 7 p.m.
Rev. Jill Warner encourages people of all denominations to attend.
“It’s a more meditative space for the holiday season. It’s specifically designed for people who are struggling to participate in the joy of the season,” she explained.
“People who have suffered a loss or have other issues around it. Perhaps it’s an anniversary of a death at this time of year and it’s a little difficult,” Rev. Warner added.
The “Longest Night” service will feature a few prayers, readings, some mood-appropriate hymns, and “time to share some memories,” noted Rev. Warner.
Refreshments will be served in the church foyer following the service, which is expected to run about an hour long.
The candlelight service, which is sponsored by the church and the Rainy River District Palliative Care volunteers, has been held annually for 18 years, with the first (then known as “Blue Christmas”) taking place in 1989.
