All-candidates debate slated Wednesday

With the federal election campaign well underway, the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce has organized an all-candidates’ debate for this Wednesday (June 2) at the Civic Centre so the public can hear where the candidates stand on various issues.
Organizer Dawn Booth said Monday that four of the local five candidates have confirmed their attendance. “We’re just waiting to hear back from the Green Party candidate [Russ Aegard],” she noted.
Confirmed are Liberal candidate Ken Boshcoff, Conservative candidate David Leskowski, NDP candidate John Rafferty, and Johannes Scheibler of the Christian Heritage Party.
The format will be similar to the debate held here last September during the provincial election.
Moderator Gary Rogozinski, the Chamber’s first vice-president, will give each candidate three minutes for opening remarks.
Then each candidate will be asked five questions from the four local media outlets and the Chamber, being allotted two minutes each to respond.
After all the candidates have answered the questions, each will have one minute for rebuttal.
Fort Frances Living will ask the first question regarding taxation, followed by the Westend Weekly (transportation and infrastructure), B93 FM (health care), and the Fort Frances Times (international border crossing issues).
The Chamber’s question will deal with economic development.
The debate will conclude with each candidate being allowed three minutes of closing remarks.
The public is welcome to attend the debate, which will begin at 7 p.m. and is scheduled to conclude at 9 p.m.
Shaw Cable also will broadcast it live on Channel 10.
