Alberton, Morley land provincial funding

The townships of Alberton and Morley will begin work to upgrade local infrastructure and community facilities thanks to two investments of $100,000 each from the provincial government.
MPP Steve Gilchrist was in Alberton on Monday afternoon to make the announcement on behalf of Northern Development and Mines minister Jim Wilson, who also chairs the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp.
“These provincial investments in improved civic infrastructure continue to improve the quality of life and build strong communities in this area and throughout the north,” Gilchrist said.
“NOHFC programs, developed in consultation with northern leaders, are helping communities address local infrastructure priorities,” he added. “We are proud to make this contribution.”
Morley Reeve Gary Gamsby was pleased with the money—and his community’s role in the decision-making process.
“We appreciate the assistance. It recognizes the need and it recognizes the community can best decide how the money should be spent,” he remarked.
Morley will use its share to improve the Stratton Community Centre complex, including a new water storage tank and sound system, provide for security fencing at the Morley landfill site, and purchase equipment for the Morley playground.
Alberton, meanwhile, will resurface Hill Road and Ducharme Road with its $100,000. The work will improve traffic flow and safety for residents.
“This is great news for us, as we will now enjoy greater convenience and safety with the elimination of the potholes and dust caused by the gravel road surface,” said Alberton Reeve John Milling.
“We very much appreciate the Ontario government’s support, without which we could not undertake this project.”
Since October, 1996, the Ontario government—through the NOHFC—has contributed nearly $356 million to some 1,030 projects, generating an additional $832 million from project partners and creating an estimated 14,700 jobs in Northern Ontario.
