Alberton will only have one referendum question on the ballot for this fall’s municipal election after all.
After a public session July 20, Alberton council had decided to include four questions on the ballot in a referendum over building a new community hall there.
But after talking to ministry reps, the ballot will only contain one question–“Are you in favour of the construction of a new community hall in the Township of Alberton?”
The other three questions dealt with whether to build the new hall attached to Alberton Central School, as a stand-alone structure, or renovate the existing hall.
“The ministry recommends not having those [other] three questions,” clerk Faye Flatt said.
Adding the three questions has been reconsidered because it would result in a split vote rather than a clear-cut answer, and the format of the questions would allow for them to be appealed.
The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing even suggested it would appeal the results itself.
There also some concern about including Alberton Central School in the referendum because the compliance of the local public school board does not fall under the municipality’s jurisdiction.
