Accident victim’s condition upgraded

A Dryden woman who was critically injured in a freak accident on Highway 502 on July 2 has been removed from the intensive care unit of a Thunder Bay hospital.
Barb Olafson, assistant director of communications for McKellar hospital, reported today Joyce Butts’s condition has been upgraded from critical to serious after spending two weeks in the hospital’s ICU.
Butts, 40, suffered severe head and face injuries when the van in which she was a passenger was struck by a spare wheel that had become detached from another vehicle.
OPP later found the vehicle from which the wheel had fallen and after an investigation, elected to lay no charges.
Police now consider the incident closed.
