Accident closes Trans-Canada for eight hours

Highway 17 was closed for eight hours on Saturday after a fiery two-vehicle collision around 11:20 a.m. at Borups Corners in Melgund Township near Dryden.
The driver and passenger in an eastbound SUV were killed when it crossed into the westbound lane and collided with a westbound tractor-trailer unit.
Both vehicles caught fire on impact and were destroyed by the flames, which took firefighters more than five hours to extinguish.
The names of the victims not released pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 38-year-old Markham, Ont. man, was transported to the Dryden Regional Health Centre by ambulance and later released with minor injuries.
Firefighters from the Dryden, Wabigoon, and Barclay fire departments, Dryden ambulance, a technical traffic collision investigator, as well as the Identification Unit of the OPP were on the scene to assist with the investigation.
