Abitibi reaches deal at Iroquois Falls

Abitibi-Consolidated announced yesterday that the 50,000-tonne #1 specialty machine at Iroquois Falls will remain in operation following an agreement with the four unions representing employees there.
As part of the agreement, about 40 people will be laid off before the end of the year, and another 75 positions will be eliminated over the next three years mainly through early retirements.
“We are pleased to have reached an agreement which meets our main objectives of reducing costs to improve the economic viability of the #1 machine and securing our customers’ long-term needs,” said Denis Jean, senior vice-president, Northern Newsprint Operations.
The company also is pleased by the commitment shown by the employees and the mill’s management to work together towards ensuring the future of the facility.
