A second Kenora councillor has joined the race to be the Progressive Conservative candidate for Kenora-Rainy River riding in this fall’s provincial election.
Louis Roussin joins Rod McKay with a wish to make changes at a higher level of government.
“I’ve found that there was a lot of the issues that municipalities and boards—like district service boards and medical clinics, education—[that] were all led back to a lot of red tape and a lot of hesitation on the government’s [parts]—provincial and federal governments,” Roussin noted.
Roussin’s background is in risk-management for the forestry industry, as well as insurance, real estate, and development.
He also sits on a number of boards in Kenora, including the Kenora District Services Board and the city’s non-profit housing and medical boards.
Vying for a seat at Queen’s Park would mean being a conservative voice in a riding that’s been dominated by the NDP for decades.
Roussin said he hopes to build on the work that outgoing Kenora-Rainy River MPP Howard Hampton already has done for the area.
“I’d already made my decision that I was going to be a candidate before Howard retired, and subsequently I’ve talked to Howard and I’ve complimented him on all of the hard work that he did,” Roussin said.
“I’m dedicating my time and efforts to take Howard’s efforts further,” he added.
“I want to provide the same guidance that Howard provided, but deal with the issues that we have and that will be coming in the near future.”
Roussin said his efforts will be focused on bringing more attention to government regulations that don’t work for northern business developments, as well as seeing that tax dollars from Northwestern Ontario are spent here.
