Book-lovers looking for some new winter reading will be thrilled to know the Kenora-Rainy River branch of the Alzheimer Society of Canada’s sixth-annual book sale is coming up Feb. 11-13 at Revco Carpet here.
Margaret Schonewille, executive director of the local Alzheimer Society, said the sale will need donations, and that public is being asked to start looking over those shelves and picking out books with which they can bear to part.
She’s looking for books which are in excellent condition, and won’t accept encyclopedias, textbooks, Reader’s Digest condensed books, and magazines.
But donors are asked to wait until Monday, Feb. 1 to drop off their books at Revco Carpet (950 Fifth St. W.) since they only have so much room to accommodate them prior to the sale. Book donations only will be accepted until the end of the first day of the sale (Thursday).
The popular sale will take place at Revco Carpet during store hours on Thursday, Feb. 11 and Friday, Feb. 12, and again on Saturday, Feb. 13 until 1 p.m.
As in past years, the public can drop by the store, fill a bag with books, and then make a donation to the Alzheimer Society.
In other news, the local Alzheimer Society is all ready for a slew of fundraising events this weekend, starting with its annual “Penny for Your Thoughts” weigh-in at Canadian Tire, which runs tomorrow from 4-7 p.m. and again Saturday from 8:30 a.m.-noon.
People are encouraged to bring in their spare pennies (rolled or not) and have them weighed. Prizes will be given out to those with the most copper—one for a group and one for an individual.
Also Saturday, the Linda Johnston Memorial “Dinner to Remember” will take place at the Rainy River Legion.
The roast beef supper, which was sold out as of this morning, also will feature the popular “Chairs for Charity” raffle again this year.
Donations also will be accepted Saturday night for the Linda Johnston Memorial bursary, which is given out each year to a Rainy River High School graduate.
The weekend events then will culminate with the Alzheimer Society’s fifth-annual “Chefs’ Charitable Dinner and Auction,” which is slated for Sunday, Jan. 24 at 5 p.m. at the Adventure Inn ballroom here.
Schonewille, who is in Fort Frances this week in preparation for this and other events, said less than 20 tickets were left as of this morning.
Tickets cost $50 each (which includes a $25 tax receipt), which are available at the Adventure Inn, La Flambée, Lee Garden, and Emo Inn. Even if there any tickets left by Sunday evening, they will not be sold at the door so people must get them in advance, noted Schonewille.
This year’s meal will feature a prime rib entrée instead of a buffet (you’ll be able to pick how well done is your cut), along with salad, potatoes, and vegetables, as well as a selection of desserts.
The evening, which will be emceed by B93•FM morning host Christa Pare and feature musical entertainment by Lorne Nelson of Dryden, also will have a penny table, silent auction, and other fun activities.
Last January’s sold-out dinner here was the best one yet, raising about $6,200.
While she has been making the rounds to contact local businesses and other past donors, Schonewille said anyone she hasn’t reached who would like donate auction items or food to the dinner here can call 1-800-682-0245 (the Kenora office) and the message will be relayed to her ASAP.
