It was a good first month to the NorWOSSA season for the four Muskie court teams in December, but it will be a matter of shaking off the rust for their next league action tomorrow in Dryden, which comes a full three weeks after their last league contests here Dec. 18.
Both the Muskie senior and junior boys’ basketball squads have identical 3-0 records in NorWOSSA, with two wins coming against the Kenora Broncos and one off the Dryden Eagles.
They headed into the Christmas break on high notes, ousting the Broncos on home court. The seniors coasted to a 76-47 win while the juniors claimed a 50-38 victory.
Meanwhile, the Muskie senior and junior girls’ volleyball teams also are off to good starts, sporting identical 2-1 records in NorWOSSA.
The seniors took their best-of-five match against the Broncos in three sets (25-13, 25-21, and 26-24) before the holiday break, but will be in tough against a formidable Dryden squad who perennially leads the pack in volleyball.
The seniors had been swept by Dryden on Dec. 16 in their only prior league meeting with the Eagles to date.
The juniors also swept their best-of-five match with the Broncos before the break, winning by scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 25-13.
They took a set away from the Eagles on Dec. 16 before losing momentum and falling in four sets.
Muskie Junior coach Jason Cain admitted Dryden is a strong squad, and said it will take a Herculean effort to come out on top against them—thought that’s something he believes his team is capable of.
“For right now, we just have to be able to dig balls up on them,” Cain noted prior to the holidays. “They serve unbelievably [but] if we can get those balls back up, we can probably hit it right back at them and get some points back.”
