A new remuneration review committee will take a look at how much town council is paid.
Mayor Roy Avis said at last night’s council meeting (held a day later due to the Thanksgiving holiday) that it’s customary for council to review its remuneration once during its four-year term.
“It’s been something that’s been on the Administration and Finance agenda for the last probably year,” he noted, adding the current council nearly is halfway through its term.
The committee will consist of Couns. June Caul, Ken Perry, and Paul Ryan, with the mayor as an ex-officio member.
It also will get receive support from CAO Doug Brown, clerk Lisa Slomke, and human resources manager Aaron Petrin.
“We’re going to come up with some recommendations for council,” said Mayor Avis.
The last time council pay rose was in 2011.
Also at last night’s meeting, council:
•appointed Bonnie
Montgomery to the Museum Advisory Committee for a term ending Nov. 30, 2018;
•appointed Ed Gackley (Flint House) to the BIA Board of Management for a term ending Nov. 30, 2018;
•sent the amended Business Licensing Bylaw back to the Planning and Development executive committee for further review;
•endorsed the draft version of the Development of Revised Boards and Committees bylaw as amended, and further that the bylaw be brought forward at the next meeting of council (Oct. 17) for enactment;
•agreed to reduce Bill Krag’s invoice for water service repair at 800 Scott St. in the amount of $500;
•received the Minutes of Settlement for properties located on Williams Ave. (RPRR22 Pt Part 8 Parcel 14648) and 1054 Williams Ave. for the 2016 taxation year (that total financial impact is $617.16—consisting of a reduction of municipal revenue of $554.18 and education revenue of $62.98);
•agreed to renew municipal insurance with Frank Cowan Company for the period of Nov. 1, 2016-Nov. 1, 2017 in the amount of $186,240 plus applicable taxes;
•approved travel and per diem claims for Mayor Roy Avis ($536.60) for attendance at the NOMA regional conference held Sept. 21-23 in Thunder Bay;
•approved travel and per diem claims for Couns. Wendy Brunetta ($555), Ken Perry ($555), and Paul Ryan ($445) for attendance at the NOMA conference;
•approved a travel claim for Mayor Avis ($53.65) for attendance at the Police Services Board meeting Sept. 27 in Atikokan;
•referred a donation request from CUPE Local 65 to the Administration and Finance executive committee for recommendation;
•referred an advertising opportunity, in a military service recognition book from the Royal Canadian Legion Manitoba/NW Ontario Command, to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation;
•referred an invitation from the “Friends of the Fort Frances Museum,” to its fall soirée and fundraiser gala on Nov. 3, to the Administration and Finance executive committee for its recommendation;
•proclaimed Nov. 7-11 as “Poppy Week” in the Town of Fort Frances, as requested by the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29;
•proclaimed Nov. 14-18 as “Louis Riel Week” in the Town of Fort Frances, as requested by Sunset Country Métis;
•endorsed proposed revisions to the St. Francis Sports Field joint-use agreement with the Northwest Catholic District School Board and the Rainy River District School Board, and further that the mayor and clerk be authorized to execute the agreement and bylaw; and
•passed a bylaw to approve an employment agreement with Tyler Moffitt for his appointment as Fire Chief and Community Emergency Management Co-ordinator for the Town of Fort Frances.
