The Voyageur Lions, in partnership with CBC Radio, will ring in the holiday season with a dramatic reading of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” this Sunday (Nov. 25) at Knox United Church.
Starting at 7 p.m., the reading will feature Heather McLeod, co-host of “Voyage North” on CBC Radio Thunder Bay, as well as local readers Bob Grynol, Dave Ogilvie, Pat Bird, and Val Martindale.
“We’re quite excited about it,” said Martindale, a member of the Voyageur Lions club. “We had a read-through on Sunday, and our readers are very excited to be able to do this.
“It’s quite a clever piece,” added Martindale. “There’s parts in it that are quite funny.
“It’s not as sombre and forbidding as some people may think,” she stressed. “People may think of it as being a ghost story, but it’s really quite funny.”
Traditional Christmas music provided by the Knox United Church choir and bell ringers from Diane Maxey’s community choir will accompany the reading.
The performance will run about two hours long. “It won’t be a long program,” noted Martindale.
Refreshments will be served afterwards.
The reading, which Martindale hopes to make a recurring event in Fort Frances, is a fundraiser to benefit the new library building.
The Voyageur Lions are committed to furnishing an adaptive technology centre for visual and hearing impaired patrons of the library.
This centre will feature equipment such as a video magnifier, speech-enhanced computer programs, and digital audio book readers. Large print books and audio books also will be included there.
Tickets for “A Christmas Carol” are now available at Northwoods Gallery & Gifts, the Fort Frances Public Library, and Cloverleaf Grocery in Emo for $10 each.
If there’s any tickets left, they’ll be sold at the door.
