In light of the 12 fire-related deaths so far this year in Ontario, the Fort Frances Fire Rescue Service would like to remind everyone that having working smoke alarms in your home not only makes sense, it is the law.
Every home in Ontario is required to have a properly-working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas.
Homeowners: It is your responsibility to install and maintain smoke alarms on every storey of your home and outside sleeping areas.
Landlords: It is your responsibility to ensure that your rental properties comply with the law.
Tenants: If you are a tenant of a rental property and do not have the required number of smoke alarms, contact your landlord immediately.
It is against the law for tenants to remove the batteries or tamper with the alarm in any way.
A few friendly reminders:
•refer to manufacturer’s instructions when installing smoke alarms;
•test your alarms once a month;
•replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year and whenever the low-battery warning chips; and
•replace smoke alarms with new ones if they are more than 10 years old.
There are various types of smoke alarms available for many different applications. Determine which is best for you!
