Careless hunting nets fine

A Geraldton man has been fined $5,000 for unsafe hunting.
David Rody, 34, who was not present at his trial, was convicted under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.
On April 29, 2007, Rody was driving on Highway 11, west of Geraldton, with his two young sons and a dog when he saw a moose along the bush line.
An oncoming transport truck driver saw Rody pull his vehicle to the shoulder of the road, leaving the rear of his vehicle on the highway.
As the truck driver passed Rody, he heard a gunshot from Rody’s vehicle.
The truck driver called 9-1-1 and the Greenstone OPP arrived at Rody’s vehicle.
The OPP notified Ministry of Natural Resources’ conservation officers from Geraldton for further investigation.
At trial, evidence showed Rody had cut his shotgun shells to form makeshift slugs—a practice which could cause the gun to malfunction and blow up.
Justice of the Peace Liette Hunter heard the case April 22 in Geraldton.
