REGINA–The Saskatchewan coroner’s office is investigating the death of a 12-year-old girl who was found under snow behind her home.
Police and other first responders were called to a Regina residence Tuesday night.
“The call came in of a child believed to be deceased in the backyard,” said Regina police spokeswoman Elizabeth Popowich.
“The child was transported to hospital and then pronounced deceased at hospital later in the evening.”
She said police are assisting the coroner’s office in its investigation.
The death is not considered suspicious.
A neighbour who did not want to be named said her children and others in the neighbourhood had been playing outside in the snow earlier in the day.
The city was dumped with snow in recent days and school buses haven’t been running.
Regina Catholic Schools said the girl was a Grade 7 student at Ecole St. Elizabeth School.
The school has brought in grief counsellors to help students and staff.
