Dog buried alive in stable condition

MONTREAL–An injured dog found buried alive on Montreal’s South Shore appears to be in stable condition as police and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals investigate what happened to the animal.
The Monteregie SPCA said in a Facebook post that the dog, a Boxer mix, was extremely dehydrated when it was first brought in for care Tuesday and couldn’t even lift its head, but managed to do just that a day later.
The dog can’t stand up at this time but seems to have sensation in its legs, meaning it may not be paralyzed from a severe neck injury as feared, the organization added.
“This is the first time we’ve had a situation where a dog was buried alive,” said the organization’s director, Linda Robertson.
The pup was spotted by a man walking in a field in Saint-Paul-D’Abbotsford, Robertson noted.
He heard a whimper and saw a dog’s paw sticking out of fresh topsoil, she said.
The man dug the animal out of the ground, Robertson said, adding the dog had been wrapped in a sheet.
It’s unclear how long the dog had been underground.
Robertson said it appears the dog was strangled and hit on the head with a blunt object.
The dog, who didn’t have a tag or a microchip, was taken to a vet clinic where it continues to undergo tests, she noted.
“It was touch and go when he came in and during the night they were hoping that he would make it,” Robertson remarked.
