The annual Canada Day fastball tournament in Barwick featured plenty of sunny skies to complement the smiling faces seen on all who took part as the Fort Frances Sight & Sound team pulled off a hotly-contested 6-5 victory over Pinewood in the tournament final.
But the real story of the day was how smoothly the weather cooperated, making for ideal conditions to enjoy the day’s festivities.
“A lot of people came out, the parade was good, there was a tremendous amount of work from the volunteers, and it was just a great celebration,” said George Oltsher of the local Barwick Blue Knights fastball team.
The final game went to extra innings, making for an exciting finish.
“It was a super game, after seven it was tied 3-3, and after 12 innings of well played ball, Sight and Sound pulled it off,” Oltsher said. “It was very exciting and really capped off a good day.”
The visiting Pinewood team was a mish-mash of players from Alberta, Winnipeg, Kenora, Dryden, and Oxdrift who all used to live and play in the area, and came back to enjoy the yearly fastball fixture in Barwick.
A moment of silence was also reserved for former league umpires Kingsley Downs (who died five years ago on July 1), and Gus Lindberg, who was formerly the home umpire in Barwick and had been involved in the tournament for more than 25 years.
Oltsher said he has documentation for the tournament going back 38 years, but also mentioned that it has been running a lot longer than that.
