Braves tame Tigers in opener


The Fort Frances Braves are well on their way to defending their Rainy River District Fastball League crown from a year ago.
Cole Tymkin hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to lift the East Division champs to a thrilling 3-2 win over the Dawson Tigers in the opening game of the best-of-three RRDFL championship final Tuesday evening at Couchiching.
Travis Tom was solid on the rubber in earning the win while Jeff Morrison suffered the loss.
Game 2 is slated for this coming Tuesday (Aug. 21) in Pinewood.
Game 3, if necessary, will go next Thursday (Aug. 23) back at Couchiching.
In Rainy River District Women’s Fastball League playoff action, meanwhile, the second-seeded Red Gut Babes cruised to a 14-5 romp over the third-seeded Emo Renegades in the Loser’s Side final yesterday evening.
Lynn Windego, Alyssa Windego, and Kayla Windigo all homered to pace the Babes’ offence.
Tracy Morningstar picked up the win while Karma Andy was tagged with the season-ending loss for the Renegades.
Game MVPs were Andy (Renegades) and Windigo (Babes).
The Babes now will host the fourth-seeded Fort Frances Her-ricanes in the RRDWFL championship final this Monday (Aug. 20) at 6 p.m.
A second game, if necessary, will be played next Wednesday (Aug. 22) at 6 p.m.
