Bowman sails to narrow win

    In the third race of the Wednesday Night fall series, Ron Bowman’s winning streak almost came to an end.
    The “Mad Hatter,” steered by Mary Bartlett, performed well in the strong westerly winds.
    However, after the handicaps were applied, Bowman came out on top again, finishing just 32 seconds ahead of Bartlett.
    Placing third of the nine boats competing was Peter Engberg aboard “Wing ’N It.”
    This weekend, the sailors will enjoy the longest race of the season. A captains’ meeting will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Island View Lodge for the annual Kettle Falls Regatta.
    While many of the local sailors prepare for Kettle Falls, Quinn McCarthy is participating in two races on Lake Superior. Last weekend, McCarthy boarded a J41 to sail in the International Race from Thunder Bay to Houghton, Mich.
    He crewed on “Northern Harrier” with captain Chris Wells, who took first place overall out of seven sailboats competing.
    This weekend they will participate in the Trans-Superior Race, which covers 338 miles from Sault St. Marie to Duluth.
