Both, Mose top canoe race

Wayne Both and Sheldon Mose led the pack during the second-annual Barwick canoe race Saturday on Rainy River, which was held in conjunction with Chapple Day 2000.
The pair finished the roughly six-km route from the Manitou Rapids landing to the Barwick dock in 43 minutes, which also include a brief “portage” up and down the riverbank before the finish line.
“Our time today was faster than our practice run,” noted Both. “It took us 45 minutes when we practised and we didn’t do the portage [that day].”
Both and Mose said they didn’t enter the race to win. “I just went in it for something to do. I never expected to win,” laughed Mose.
Still, the pair noted it was a long haul to the finish line. “The ‘portage’ was the hardest part,” noted Mose.
“The race was good but a little bit windy . . . the ‘portage’ had to be the hardest part,” echoed Both
Most of the other 12 two-person teams agreed the wind made it difficult to paddle their canoes.
“It was fun but too windy,” noted Shane Korkola, who teamed up with Tom Badiuk to finish in 10th place with a time of 57:30. “It was very windy . . . there were whitecaps on the water.
“I have never paddled through waves like that before,” he remarked.
George Olshter, who finished in fourth place with Clifton Chojko-Bolec in a time of 50 minutes flat echoed Korkola’s comments.
“It was a great time but it was hard for an old guy,” echoed George Oltsher, who finished fourth with Clifton Chojko-Bolec in a time of 50 minutes flat. “It was tough going into the wind.”
The father-and-son team of Matthew and Tom Anderson, who finished in sixth place with a time of 53:30, agreed it was fun but tiring.
“It was fun but I am tired,” noted the elder Anderson. “[Matthew] was looking for water halfway through the race.”
In fact, two teams did not finish the race. And then there was Chapple Reeve Cecil Wilson and Rainy River First Nation Chief Jim Leonard, who were disqualified for having a motor on the back of their canoe.
The complete race results were as follows:
1. Wayne Both/Sheldon Mose (43 minutes);
2. Gary Both/Bud Dickson (44:45);
3. Wes/Charles Friesen (48:20);
4. George Oltsher/Clifton Chojko-Bolec (50.00);
5. Don Huitikka/Kevin Croswell (50.02);
6. Tom/Matthew Anderson (53:30);

8. Jennifer Mercer/Elizabeth MacEachern (56:00);
